Basic Smudge | First Attempt

Recommended Posts

Spiridon

I was giving the task by a junior artist to create a piece where the canvas seemed to be ripping apart or deteriorating in some way using only the smudge tool. This is my go at it. Thank you Syndrome for the test. I will be making more smudge LP's. :) (BTW - This was not meant to be a crazy piece with effects all over, just a simple test of my smudge skills to date.)

Let me know how I did pimped-pixels. :P

Toxin

well, it looks like a decently done smudge :) even, smooth, contrasting. would maybe try out some different smudge brushes and make it chaotic around the sides. Some darker areas (black) would be great as well. thats my opinion, just continue trying it out mate. kiu! :P

and since you said deteriorating, why not add some brown patches on the edge as well, idk lol.

I was gonna say the exact same, make parts darker and have some rips around the edges of the smudging? :)

Nice smudging though, good work ;)

Nanaki

looks good

what makes a good smudge piece is the use of contrast and usually color.

when you have smudged something out with a larger brush, then take a paintbrush or use a diff setting on smudge tool.

I start out at about 20-25 pixel smudge brush and end up around 3 pixels

add dark lines with paintbrush and blend them in, add light lines and blend them in.

try and create a sense of flow and good curvature.

smudging is awesome! gj on this kiu

Will do Nanaki. I'm busy all day today but I will definitely work on it this weekend. I started off with just gray and white cause it was my first attempt and I didn't want to go overboard on something I'm not used to. I'll add some blues and purples. ;)

Well, everything has been said, in any event, I like how this has a focal, if you want to call it that.

I would have made sharper edges, they look a little to soft to be ripping, but nice work!

About Us

Pimped Pixels was founded in 2010 by Maniak, Asura, Cliffbuck and Evilangel. Shortly afterwards Mikey jumped onboard and joined the team. We are a group of friends with a passion for art and a need to help others by sharing. The site started with just the four and in a short while grew to a community of over 4000 members. Everyone is welcome here, from complete beginners to all out professionals. We have something for everyone. Our aim is to give everyone with the "bug" a place to learn, make friends and share their passion.

Congratulations to iEatB4breakfast for winning this weeks SOTW
