Been applying to many contests on freelancer these days. I don't expect to win the as I am inexperienced but this is a good practice for sure :)

Not a bad start Wany, i'd personally smooth out the highlights on the waves and possibly look at the chef size as any smaller than show, there could be a problem seeing the small details ;)

I think it's too busy and unbalanced. I would lose the chef and make the sun and wave bigger to fill the space, also change the colour on the sun to match the colours in the logo and use a different cleaner font.

It's a great start but with practice you'll do well. With logos the more simple the better. Think of all the most iconic logos, some are just a simple shape or letter. If you apply that to your designs then I'm sure you'll start winning some of these comps, best of luck to you Wany! :D

My personal opinion: kill the waves emblem you've got going on and move forward with the chef instead.

Imagine your logo in context. These things don't sit on white backdrops, they're gonna be on aprons, napkins, hats, etc. Think southern food, think chef. What kind of food do they serve? Maybe your chef can be wearing a hat that is reminiscent of the kind of food they serve? Maybe he can sit on an abstract-looking wave if you want to keep that? Maybe I'm being too fun with it and they want something more serious but if you can tie in the chef mascot with the food they serve, you could have a winner just because it'll be an enjoyable little logo to look at.

Here, I normally keep these things to myself around designers local to me (they're competition haha) but: http://dealjumbo.com/freebies-for-you/ - Go there and ransack all the relevant logo mockups you can find. GraphicBurger is probably better actually. When presenting logos for these competitions, you should show them in mockups because straight away then, you stand out from the 10 to 15 other designers that are producing the same work as each other (as is my experience with competition work). Sometimes they'll win because the client is uninformed and doesn't know that now, there are 1,000 companies out there that look exactly the same as him but I think they'll appreciate the extra effort you're putting in. Maybe go the extra yard and make them a quick business card, show it in this mockup for example, etc etc.

Keep at it and keep it up. :)
